They Don't Always Work For Everyone: YA Edition

At Read My Mind, being the founder and only reviewer, it's quite easy to accept requests and read books that have a more than 70% of being liked. I know that some blogs are used as a promotional tool, so critical reviews aren't really posted. I also know that there is an argument for the usefulness of critical reviews. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle of this. Most of the time my reviews are 3.5 stars or better. One reason for this, I already explained. Another reason, is that I just plain like a very wide variety of genres and sub-genres. Historical romance, like. Steampunk, like. Science-fiction, like. YA contemporary, like. Erotic romance, like. and so on.

I pretty much finish everything that I start, so I can't call these books DNFs. With a combination of fairly fast reading, middle-of-the-day free time (aka, boring o'clock) and quick comprehension, I haven't come up against a book that I had to "give up on" in years. But, there are sometimes when a book just doesn't work for me overall. Even when there are some elements that come together, others do not, or I just don't feel an urgency to pick up the book when I have time to read. There are also times that I hear rave reviews from people who's recommendations I trust, and I think, am I missing something?

I thought that I'd start doing some capsule reviews of these books. I read so much that doesn't make it to the blog, and on Goodreads, you can see what I've rated the book, but not why, and this will seek to remedy that.

Crewel by Jennifer Albin:
Enter a tangled world of secrets and intrigue where a girl is in charge of other’s destinies, but not her own.

Sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has always been special. When her parents discover her gift—the ability to weave the very fabric of reality—they train her to hide it. For good reason, they don’t want her to become a Spinster — one of the elite, beautiful, and deadly women who determine what people eat, where they live, how many children they have, and even when they die.

Thrust into the opulent Western Coventry, Adelice will be tried, tested and tempted as she navigates the deadly politics at play behind its walls. Now caught in a web of lies and forbidden romance, she must unravel the sinister truth behind her own unspeakable power. Her world is hanging by a thread, and Adelice, alone, can decide to save it — or destroy it.

My Thoughts:
Ok, so first, I liked the writing and the story line was interesting and unique. I acquired CREWEL at BEA2012, because of some of the advance acclaim and the duology of the title. (I knew that crewel was a sewing term, as well as being used as a homonym to "cruel") This is the sort of thing that I go for; cleverness in "stitching" the title and the plot, and "easter egg" type elements dropped in. However, something was just missing otherwise.

I just thought that, while the story and world were well-built and paced, there was no mystery. There were too many elements that I have come to associate with YA novels, in whatever sub-genre they come from, and I found the whole thing to be predictable. Reaching the end of the book didn't give me any satisfaction or pleasure. In the end, CREWEL was lackluster and rote.

Pretty Amy by Lisa Burstein:
Amy is fine living in the shadows of beautiful Lila and uber-cool Cassie, because at least she’s somewhat beautiful and uber-cool by association. But when the girls get stood up for prom and take matters into their own hands—earning them a night in jail outfitted in satin, stilettos, and Spanx — Amy discovers even a prom spent in handcuffs might be better than the humiliating “rehabilitation techniques” now filling up her summer. Even worse, with Lila and Cassie parentally banned, Amy feels like she has nothing — like she is nothing.

Navigating unlikely alliances with her new coworker, two very different boys, and possibly even her parents, Amy struggles to decide if it’s worth being a best friend when it makes you a public enemy. Bringing readers along on an often hilarious and heartwarming journey, Amy finds that maybe getting a life only happens once you think your life is over.

My Thoughts:
With PRETTY AMY, the fatal flaw was that I could not, in any way, connect with the titular character. The thing is, the blurb makes it sound like Amy is this angel who follows along in the footsteps of her friends, who oops, get her into to trouble. But the truth is, Amy is complicit in many underage and illegal activities. While I was reading, she just came off as a spoiled rebel without a cause, and the summer that she has to look forward to is a little bit deserved.

Some of Amy's redemption (and the book's, frankly) is earned through her journey, the other characters that she meets and interacts with, and the ultimate ending of the book. Again, as with CREWEL, PRETTY AMY is written well and the author displays skill in bringing the reader into the world she has constructed. However, being able to connect with the main character is pretty much a must for me, and it just didn't happen here.

Goddess Fish VBT: Mona Lisa's Room by Vonnie Davis w/ GC Giveaway

Goddess Fish Promotions is hosting a book blitz and blog tour for MONA LISA'S ROOM by Vonnie Davis. Read My Mind is participating in a gift card giveaway courtesy of the author!

Want to know more about the book?.

Blurb:
Gwen,

You won’t believe this email. I’m sitting in a French safe house, eating caviar and drinking champagne with handsome government agent, Niko Reynard. He’s wearing nothing but silk pajama bottoms and mega doses of sex appeal. I’m in big trouble, little sister. He’s kissed me several times and given me a foot massage that nearly caused spontaneous combustion. I'm feeling strangely virginal compared to the sexual prowess this thirty-year-old man exudes.

When I came to Paris for a bit of adventure, I never imagined I’d foil a bombing attempt, karate-kick two men, and run from terrorists while wearing a new pair of stilettos. I met a German musician, a gay poet from Australia, and the most delightful older French woman.

Don’t worry. I’m safe…the jury’s still out on yummy Niko, though. The more champagne I drink, the less reserved I feel. What an unforgettable fortieth birthday!

Here's a juicy excerpt of MONA LISA'S ROOM!

***

When Niko ended the mind-blowing kiss, he pulled her closer, if that were possible, and
whispered in her ear. “We’re being followed. Hold my hand and run.”

Run? Melting came to mind, but running? How could she run when he kissed her until the bones in her legs turned to jelly? Plus, she was wearing new high heels.

His arms squeezed her for an instant. “Now.”

He grabbed her hand, and they took off. They dodged throngs of pedestrians and at one point, Niko hurtled over a poodle, its protective owner shouting in French outrage, calling him a fool. “Fou! Fou! Mon chien, mon chien!”

Alyson had done her fair share of running, especially after her break up with Chaz. Running was a stress reliever; so were the Stair Master and martial arts. Still, those activities were done in sneakers or barefooted, not high heels. Stilettos, no less. Oh, and the thong. Let’s not forget the damn thong chafing her in places she didn’t want to think about. She’d kill Gwen when she got home.

“Faster, Aly!”

“You put me in three-inch heels and expect me to run fast? You bossy Frenchman with a foot
fetish.” She stumbled, and he caught her.

“Typical woman. Kiss her once and she figures she has the right to bitch at you.” Niko’s head
turned, evidently scanning the area as they ran.

She tried jerking her arm free of his ironclad grasp. “So help me, God, if that terrorist doesn’t kill you, I will.”

He pulled her around two uniformed nannies pushing toddlers in strollers. “Promises. Promises.”

“Yeah, well look how nice my hips sway now, nutso, running in these damned heels.”

Niko quickly glanced up and down the wide tree-lined street and evidently seeing a slight break in traffic, ordered, “To the other side. Now.”

They bolted across the four-lane boulevard and its well-manicured median. Two motorbikes rumbled past, nearly hitting them. Horns blared as several Renaults and Smart Cars barreled down the street.

Niko shoved her out of the way and she fell, her hands and knees scraping on the asphalt. Brakes screeched and there was a dull thud behind her. She glanced back over her shoulder just as Niko rolled across the hood of a silver car. He never broke stride. “Run, dammit!”

“That must account for your great legs. Which reminds me—” he slid the ottoman back and picked up her foot “—I promised you a foot massage.”

Oh, good Lord. “That’s really not necessary.” His thumb pressed into the ball of her foot, and she wanted to whimper.“Your feet have taken a beating today. Running in those new high heels couldn’t have been
comfortable.”

His magic fingers rubbed and kneaded the muscles of her foot and toes. She sighed in pure
pleasure, or purred. God bless magic fingers.

“Yet you never once complained. You’re a strong woman, Aly.” He bent and placed a gentle kiss to her toes and then to the instep of her foot, as his warm hands continued kneading her flesh.

“I... I’ve never had my toes kissed before.”

His dark head rose and chocolate eyes stared at her before he tilted his head to the side, as if
regarding every nuance of her expression. “I have so much I could teach you, cherie. You deserve to be cherished.” He bent and kissed her ankle as his large hands moved slowly up her leg, rubbing her sore calves. “Your skin is so soft. A man could die happy after touching you and feeling you respond to him. Men dream of such a reaction from a woman.” His fingertips played a sonata on her skin. Feather-light touches hummed promises. Her body sang its own sultry reply.

“Your calf muscles are tight. Did you use bath salts when you bathed?” He seemed intent on
rubbing her muscles into submission. Her womanly muscles had already succumbed by this point.

Alyson cleared her throat, hoping her voice wouldn’t give her away. “Yes. Yes, I did.”

“Good.” One warm hand slid behind her knee, slowly raising it. “Are these scrapes from when you fell this afternoon? He kissed first one and then the other, slow, sensual kisses. Oh, good Lord! How much more can I take before I haul him to me and beg him to end this thing?

His palms slowly rubbed her thighs, then stilled. “What do we have here?” A finger pushed the hem of her sleep shorts higher. “A tat?” His dark gaze swept to hers and his voice dropped to a sensual whisper. “I never imagined you would have a tattoo. You know I never cared much for butterflies—” he placed a kiss on the blue and purple butterfly “—but my opinion of them has suddenly changed.

Nick tapped on the doorframe.

"Oh, thank God," she said under her breath.

"Honey, I have the boxes you asked for," he said, sauntering in, still wearing his fire department uniform. The navy Polo shirt and cargo pants fit him to a T.

Ava had to admit he made a hunky picture. She wondered why she didn't have the same reaction to his six foot two well-muscled frame as all her girlfriends. They all loved his kind brown eyes, boyish good looks, and underwear-model body.

Her mind flashed to the day, five years ago, when she met Nick. Her roommate dragged her to a fundraiser for the local hospital's burn unit. That night firefighters stripped down to their skivvies for a good cause.

She remembered her shock and dismay when he pulled her up on the stage and kissed her senseless. When Nick realized he'd scared her spitless, he bought her a drink and apologized--then bugged her until they were best friends. He'd been kissing her and calling her honey ever since. She loved him like an annoying brother.

He dropped the boxes next to Sister Mary Elizabeth, gave her a little wink, then continued toward Ava. Nick turned her office chair and pressed his lips to hers. She waited for the tingling feelings to start, but nothing. Not even when the tip of his tongue swiped her bottom lip. Am I dead inside?

Ava leaned back and forced a smile. "Hi, honey, thank you for coming on short notice."

Nick sat on her desk, his back to the now sputtering sister and mouthed, Nothing?

Ava grinned and shook her head. "Nick, let me introduce you to Sister Mary Elizabeth."

He winked again and stood to face the fuming woman. "Nice to meet you, Sister."

Nick must have blessed her with his charming smile, because the old nun's face twisted into a small grin. It must work on every woman on the planet--except for her.

The Night After (Release) Dual Review: The Prince by Tiffany Reisz

JL from An Avid Reader's Musings guest posted at Read My Mind when we double reviewed THE ANGEL by Tiffany Reisz. She's back in another dual review of the next book in the ORIGINAL SINNERS series, THE PRINCE!

Plug: THE PRINCE by Tiffany Reisz just released yesterday, November 20th, from Mira Books (Harlequin)

Blurb:
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer...preferably in bed. That's always been Kingsley Edge's strategy with his associate, the notorious New York dominatrix Nora Sutherlin. But with Nora away in Kentucky, now it's Kingsley's chance to take her place at the feet of the only man he's ever wanted -- Søren, Nora's on-again, off-again lover -- until a new threat from an old enemy forces him to confront his past.

Wes Railey is still the object of Nora's tamest yet most maddening fantasies, and the one man she can't forget. He's young. He's wonderful. He's also thoroughbred royalty and she's in "his" world now. But Nora is no simpering Southern belle, and her dream of fitting into Wesley's world is perpetually at odds with her dear Søren's relentlessly seductive pull.

Two worlds of wealth and passion call to her and whichever one Nora chooses, it will be the hardest decision she will ever have to make... unless someone makes it for her...

Lillie says:

Favorite Character And What Scene Decided Favorite:

It's gotta be Kingsley, doesn't it?! Ok, so Søren is my overall favorite from the first time his name was uttered in THE SIREN, but this book exposes (pun intended) so so much about Kingsley, his personality and his kink. The way that Tiffany Reisz explored his feelings and the pain that he endured in the days and weeks after Søren and he are first together... that's what made me respect Kingsley as a character. And especially as a boy-man who's discovered that his sexuality is not, by any means, average.

Outstanding Quotes:

Kingsley looked down and saw his hand had developed a subtle tremor. Matthew saw it, too.
"Don't feel bad." The boy nodded with the wisdom of a sage. "He does that to everybody."

Reaching up to his neck, Søren pulled off his Roman collar. He stepped back into Kingsley's bedroom and locked the door behind him.
God closed His eyes.

"Wesley... never fuck with a sadist. For Søren, torture's just foreplay."

"I do love him. Love and having an escape plan are not mutually exclusive. They are, in fact, both highly recommended."

Final Thoughts:

I've liked every novel to date, in THE ORIGINAL SINNERS series. Reisz has a talent for drawing the reader in, and I've seen others that have been seduced by the books, even when they say BDSM isn't their "thing".

THE SIREN was sharp, smart and echoed the sassiness of Nora, as well as the no-holds-barred attitude of Zach. THE ANGEL was sumptuously sexual, as it explored the "while the cat's away..." situation that Nora, Griffin and Michael found themselves in. However, THE PRINCE was much more lyrical and turbulent at the same time.

Though Nora and Wes are back together, what shone was the relationship of Søren and Kingsley. The reader gets a chance to see how the two met and evolved. Reisz lays out a land mine of a story here. At every turn, a new bomb is discovered, and the reader has to navigate the intricacies of a field set to explode.

Book Rating:
13.5/15

JL says:

Favorite character and what scene decided this favorite:

Kingsley is still my favorite character by far, in THE ORIGINAL SINNERS series, but I have to say Søren endeared himself to me in THE PRINCE. My favorite scene is between Kingsley and Søren, after their first sexual encounter as teens, when Søren explains to Kingsley that he can only get aroused if he causes pain. The conversation between the two is great. Søren is unapologetic about the level of pain and damage he caused to Kingsley, yet there is something about him saying he will make an effort to not be as brutal during their next encounter, that pulled at me. Their discussion is frank and open and Kingsley accepts Søren for who is he, without reservations.

Outstanding quote(s):

"He drank pain in those days, drank it like water, got drunk on it like wine. For years now, his tongue had been dry with the thirst to drink it again."

"Perhaps people like him-the men who felt that rush of power when bringing a woman to the edge of terror...or who, also like him, felt that rush of bliss when brought to their knees-really didn't belong in the world. Not in the daylight world, anyway, the downstairs world, the world that made itself presentable for company. He and his kind belonged in darkness, in the night, in the upstairs rooms where no one was allowed to go."

Final thoughts:

This was me on reading the ending of THE PRINCE. Talk about cliffhanger! Author Tiffany Reisz isn't kidding around when she says she is the queen of the mindfuck.

But going beyond the ending, THE PRINCE gives readers valuable insight into the past relationship between Kingsley and Søren, something that is only hinted at in the two previous books (THE SIREN and THE ANGEL). Nora is also presented in a different light as she explores her relationship with Wesley. It's very interesting to see the juxtaposition of Søren's past relationship and Nora's present one. I also loved seeing a different facet of Kingsley's character.

If you haven't had a chance to read THE PRINCE, go out and buy it today! Be aware though, this book is clearly in a series and you must read THE SIREN and THE ANGEL first. Both can be purchased from the Harlequin website HERE, in print or ebook format.

But when Kale--a dark and handsome stranger with a mysterious past--reveals the true meaning of her visions and the tremendous power she wields through them, Ella must come to terms with the devastating truths of her own past, while eluding an ancient Dark Prince who seeks to control not only her future, but all of mankind’s, by means of abilities that Ella is only beginning to understand.

Enter the shrouded world of an age old battle between an ancient race known as the Immortals and their bitter enemy Laurent, the so-called Dark Prince, who commands an army of half-breed vampires known as Chorý. Both sides have been desperately searching for the prophesied emergence of the Arc, a clairvoyant with unparalleled power to recall the past and a soothsayer with clear vision into the future.

The Council of Immortals has sworn to protect the Arc, whom they have identified as young Ella Monroe, a college freshman from Virginia living quietly and unaware of her powers or her past. But a renegade Chorý has other plans for the protection of a girl he has loved through the ages. Can Kale convince Ella of who she is, what she is destined to become, and what he once meant to her? Is he truly the best protector to shield the world from the devastating misuse of her powers that Laurent is bent on controlling? Or will the forbidden love they share and Kale’s cursed condition as a retched and hated Chorý be used against them both?

Excerpt

“I want to untie you, but I don’t want to regret doing so. Can we agree that everyone will behave?” I looked at Kale, but all I received was a shrug and another grumble. Jace’s blue eyes were glued to Kale.

“Ella, when I am untied, I will do whatever I can to take you back to the Council. I won’t have this creature infect you.” Kale straightened up and moved closer to us.

“Over my dead body.” Jace’s slow, chilling smile revealed his white teeth. Though it was beautiful, it freaked me out.

“Then it should be easy, Nosferat, seeing as how your heart no longer beats.” Jace looked at Kale as if he would attack the first chance he got. At this rate, I would never be able to get Kale and Jace to work together. Maybe Kale was right. We might be better off fending for ourselves against Laurent.

“You mistake the fact you are still alive for weakness on my part, but I warn you that as soon she sees you are not a necessary factor for her survival, I will finish what we started years ago, Vesco,” Kale spat, with such malice that halfway through his words I turned around to face him, not at all liking what I saw. His face was now plagued by hard lines, and his eyes, though they were always dark, were darkened with loathing. I hardly recognized him. I didn't want to believe Kale would truly kill Jace or anyone for that matter.

“Stop, Kale, you wouldn’t,” I whispered. I searched his face for the Kale I knew. I understood the Council and vampires were enemies, but I couldn't see Kale killing Jace. It was probably my naivety that pushed the idea that Kale was harmless.

“Yes, he would, Ella,” Jace said, pulling my attention back to his blue eyes. “It’s what he is—a murderer fashioned only to steal what humans cannot live without and to spread his disease. He was created by the Dark Prince. No matter how long he tries to deny his nature by drinking from rats and squirrels, he will always be a threat to you and all others. Even more so because he can walk in the light.

My plan to unite them to help me went right out the window. My body went cold, and I sat there wondering why I’d even tried in the first place. Anger started to boil inside me, and I gave in to it.

“Bullshit!” I yelled. “This is pure and utter bullshit.” I stood so fast that I almost lost my footing.

Kale reached out to me, catching my arm and righting me quickly. I snatched my arm from him and ignored his questioning eyes. I turned back to Jace. I looked him directly in his eyes to get his full attention.

“You both say you want to protect me, and that’s fine. Even though I have no clue of what’s going on in the full scheme of things, I am willing to let you both protect me, but understand this. If you two cannot figure out how to get along long enough for us to make a plan—other than taking me to the Council—I will do this without either of you!” I shouted, as my anger reached a crescendo. “Also, I want to know everything, not just what you two think I should know.” I gave Kale a pointed look.

He looked back at me with emotionless eyes. I hated when he blocked his feelings from me. I gave mine so freely to him. That fueled my anger further, but Jace’s calm voice slowly brought me down.

“What is it you propose we do?” Jace asked. “I can only assume from your tirade that he has told you a few things about your past. The fact that you are only upset about that also tells me he hasn’t told you why the Dark Prince has yet to find you.”

We both looked at Kale waiting for him to speak.

“Your silence, Nosferat, confirms that you have not told her the fire at the Ocean Trace facility was your doing.”
I looked at Kale, confused. I had told him about my time in a facility, but I hadn’t told him where it was.

“I told you I was here to protect you, Ella. I just never told you when that protection started,” Kale explained and reached for me.

I was tempted to take his hand because it wasn’t often that he offered his touch, but I ignored it. “Wait, are you saying you knew me before that first night we met?”

“Yes, I knew you in your last past life.”

Jace scoffed. “That is not what she meant, vampire.”

I couldn't understand why Kale was dancing around my question.

“Let’s go outside,” Kale said, turning toward the door before I could answer.

“She will freeze out there. I am sure she is already cold, especially seeing how the cold sadness of lies and betrayals has found her here tonight.”

Though Jace’s clever remark didn't seem to affect Kale, it stung me. The words lies and betrayals slapped me in the face, waking me from the stupid dream state I had allowed myself to slip into.

“Ella, I have watched you for as long as the Council has believed you are the next Arc—before your parents’ death until now,” Kale said sadly, as the trust that we had developed between us started to fade.

I had been nothing but honest with him. I’d snuck around to see him, which put a strain on Alex’s faith in me. But I couldn't truly blame Kale. Trusting a stranger with my secrets when I had promised myself I would never do that again was my fault. With that in mind, I walked over to Jace and untied his knots.

“Do not make me regret this. I have enough of those; I don’t need any more,” I said, looking at them both. We needed to make a plan of action, but we couldn't do that until I was told everything.

Blurb:
Evil is most assuredly afoot—and Britain’s fate rests in the hands of an alluring renegade . . . and a librarian.

These are dark days indeed in Victoria’s England. Londoners are vanishing, then reappearing, washing up as corpses on the banks of the Thames, drained of blood and bone. Yet the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences—the Crown’s clandestine organization whose bailiwick is the strange and unsettling—will not allow its agents to investigate. Fearless and exceedingly lovely Eliza D. Braun, however, with her bulletproof corset and a disturbing fondness for dynamite, refuses to let the matter rest . . . and she’s prepared to drag her timorous new partner, Wellington Books, along with her into the perilous fray.

For a malevolent brotherhood is operating in the deepening London shadows, intent upon the enslavement of all Britons. And Books and Braun—he with his encyclopedic brain and she with her remarkable devices—must get to the twisted roots of a most nefarious plot . . . or see England fall to the Phoenix!

I really, really enjoyed reading PHOENIX RISING. First, it was actually an audiobook read for me. Sometimes, it can be hit or miss with audiobooks. Though the vast majority that I've listened to have been good, sometimes the narrator just won't be the voice that I want to hear. Or even seem to reflect the tone of the book or characters correctly. No worries on that front here. The narrator's intonation is spot on for Ministry boss, Dr. Sound, and the slight changes he makes to mirror Eliza's New Zealand accent works well. Even Books sounds just like I would imagine.

As for the story, PHOENIX RISING is a mix of mystery, steampunk and action. It's cheeky and well-paced, with Eliza and Books' relationship and interaction being important to the way the characters get things done, but still not overshadowing the inherent adventurousness of the novel.

Blurb:
The undead matriarch of a Britain where the Aristocracy is made up of werewolves and vampires, where goblins live underground and mothers know better than to let their children out after dark. A world where being nobility means being infected with the Plague (side-effects include undeath), Hysteria is the popular affliction of the day, and leeches are considered a delicacy. And a world where technology lives side by side with magic. The year is 2012 and Pax Britannia still reigns.

Xandra Vardan is a member of the elite Royal Guard, and it is her duty to protect the Aristocracy. But when her sister goes missing, Xandra will set out on a path that undermines everything she believed in and uncover a conspiracy that threatens to topple the empire. And she is the key-the prize in a very dangerous struggle.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN is more of an urban fantasy steampunk. The world is one that has been changed by the fact that the British Empire still reigns because the queen is undead. This book explores class system under the guise of vampires, half-breeds and other creatures that bump in the night. Xandra's father is a member of the ruling class that she is sworn to protect, but never quite belong in. She lives in a dark, gritty world where secrets are being kept, and Xandra will have to be the one to uncover them.

Like in PHOENIX RISING, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN has a bit of the cheekiness that I have come to associate with British steampunk. It's a little darker, and I think a little more exclusively for urban fantasy readers who are open to steampunk. For me, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN was a fairly quick read, but the world itself was built well through Kate Locke's exposition and the characters dialog.

Former ballerina Callie Carlisle is determined to rebuild her life with her new mechanical limbs. She's just learned to accept the enhancements that saved her from certain death when she experiences uncontrollable twinges and flashes of light that obscure her vision. Terrified of literally falling apart, she resists telling her husband. Jasper's already vowed to keep her out of harm, and she doesn't want to worry him further.

When the War Office's General Black arrives with an urgent mission—rescue the doctor who created Callie's enhancements—she has no choice but to accept. A rogue agent and former patient of the scientist believes the biomechanical modifications he received are killing him, and he's out for revenge.

Callie must reach the doctor before it's too late. But with an overprotective Jasper at her side, and her alarming symptoms getting more frequent, will she be able to hold herself together long enough to save the doctor... and herself?

BROKEN PROMISES is the continuation of Callie and Jasper's story that started in FAR FROM BROKEN, which can be found as an individual novella, or in the anthology A CLOCKWORK CHRISTMAS. The first part of their story must be read, in order to understand what goes on here. Callie has had to give up her dreams of being a ballerina and learn to live with the new mechanical limbs she possesses.

What drew me to J.K. Coi's writing in the first place is her ability to evoke strong emotion with Callie and Jasper. Both are damaged characters, not just in mind and spirit. BROKEN PROMISES is at heart, a romance, but the steampunk aspect is seamlessly integrated. The world is steampunk and the story is romance.

Let's Talk About Steampunk

The sub-genre of steampunk has been growing in favor with mainstream fantasy, romance, and science-fiction fans. What I love about reading steampunk books is that the worlds seem much more inclusive than a plain Victorian historical. There is more room for racial diversity and women can be scientific, mathematical, inventors and more.

But, there are still many readers who don't know where to start when it comes to steampunk, even if they are open to reading books that fall under the sub-genre. To that end, I thought that I could comb through the books that I have read that are, or even marginally involve steampunk, gaslamp, gaslight or alternative Victorian themes.

Doing a regular feature that has several books and an abbreviated review for each book, would expose my readers to some of the different steampunk books out there. Hopefully, some will come to love steampunk as much as I do. Or if they are already in love, will suggest new reading material.

So, check out the first post at Steampunk Spectrum(1) featuring:

Romantic Maidens Book Tour: Romance In The Rain Top 10 + Giveaway

I'm happy to host the Rainy Day Writers at Read My Mind today! This group of writers, with Marianne Stillings at the head, make up the anthology ROMANCE IN THE RAIN. The collection of novellas uniquely follows members of the Caldwell family through time, starting in 1853 all the way to 2014 and have Seattle as the setting.

See my review HERE

Please welcome Charlotte Russell, Sherri Shaw and Kristine Cayne as each one spotlights Washington State and the northwest with their Top Ten List!

Rainy Day Writers:

Writing fiction is difficult and lonely and more often than not, the "normal" people in your life don't understand the writing process and can't fathom why you are possessed and obsessed with finding the perfect word or phrase that says exactly what you want to say right where you want to say it. Only other writers comprehend and accept that kind of torment.

To fill this need to surround herself with like-minded obsessive-compulsive self-doubting lunatics, in 2005, Marianne Stillings, who writes Romantic Suspense, established what came to be known as The Rainy Day Writers.

There were only two requirements for joining the group: You must be serious about writing and getting published, and any criticisms of co-members' work be honest, gentle, and kind.
Over the years, the membership has changed; some people moved on, others joined. The group we have now has been stable and constant since 2009. The Rainy Day Writers are a family.

Charlotte Russell joined the group in 2006 at the suggestion of a former member. Charlotte writes Historical Romance.

Dawn Kravagna became a member in the spring of 2007 because of a writers' list where Marianne had posted looking for new members. Dawn writes Comedy and Mystery.

In the Autumn of 2007, Sherri Shaw found her way to the group because she and Marianne happened to sit at the same table at the Emerald City Writer's Conference that year. Sherri writes Historical Romance and Paranormal Historical Romance.

Clare Tisdale joined in 2008 as the result of an email Marianne posted on the Greater Seattle Chapter Romance Writer's list seeking new members. Clare writes Contemporary Romance.

Kristine Cayne found the group in 2009 because she won Marianne's raffle basket at the Emerald City Writer's Conference that year. The basket included an offer to critique the winner's manuscript—an evaluation that resulted in an invitation to join. Kristine writes Romantic Suspense.

Charlotte Russell’s Top 10 Favorite Spots in the Northwest:

1. Deception Pass, near Whidbey Island, WA—an absolutely gorgeous spot, whether you view it from the water, the bridge spanning the pass, or from the top of Mt. Erie.

2. Westport, WA—beaches in the Pacific Northwest are… well, they aren’t what you truly think of when the word “beach” comes to mind. Sometimes a heavy coat is required on northwest beaches. Nonetheless, this is a pretty spot with a lighthouse that’s fun to visit and a cute little town with a fabulous donut shop.

3. Seaside/Cannon Beach, OR—more beaches, but these two along the northern Oregon coast are a little less rocky and windy and if you can just manage to get the one hot day of the year, it’s bliss! Seaside is more family-oriented, but they are both lovely.

4. Crater Lake, OR—you’ve not seen such a blue, blue lake until you’ve seen Crater Lake. The blueness comes from its immense depth and to top it off, you have to hike a long way down just to get to the shore.

5. Mt. Rainier, WA—I refer to the mountain as His Majesty. On a clear day I can see this imposing, snow-covered mountain from just down the street. Stunning. Never mind that it’s a volcano that hasn’t blown in hundreds of years and is due, or that I would have to evacuate my house if it did.  It’s also beautiful close up; I’ve visited six or seven times.

6. Mt. St. Helens, WA—another volcano. This one did blow, if you’ll recall. Parts of the mountain and surrounding area have recovered, but it’s truly incredible to view the devastation that is still visible.

7. Alki Beach, West Seattle—the first white settlers landed here. They didn’t stay, though, because the water wasn’t deep enough for ships to anchor. Instead they moved just across the sound to present-day downtown. Alki is a fun and funky beach suburb to hang out at for a day.

8. San Juan Islands, WA—These islands are quiet and peaceful places to relax and unwind, within a short drive from Seattle. And you get to take the ferry, always an adventure. I recommend Orcas Island particularly.

9. Olympic National Park, WA—I haven’t been there for a while, but the forests of the Olympic Mountains are just amazing (complete with the biggest banana slugs you’ve ever seen. True fact: I would keep a slug as a pet if I could!).

10. Coeur d’Alene Lake, ID—some nitpicky people might not consider Idaho a part of the Pacific Northwest, but I’m going to make the stretch. This lake is large, beautiful and unique, with different topography on either side of it. It makes for a great vacation spot.

Sherri Shaw’s Top 10 Favorite Pacific Northwest Spots:

1. Alki Beach, West Seattle, WA: The Alki beach strip runs from Alki Point to Duwamish. With stunning views of the Seattle skyline, the 2.5 mile long trail is ideal for biking, walking, or taking a casual stroll.

2. The Staircase, Hoodsport, WA: When I first moved to the Pacific Northwest, my extended family used to go camping at the Staircase. Located in the Olympic National Forest, it offers an easy climb up a winding trail to the “staircase,” a series of tiered waterfalls with fresh spring water straight from the mountains.

3. Hurricane Ridge, Pt. Angeles, WA: Another favorite family outing site is Hurricane Ridge. It is an easily accessible mountain area within Olympic National Park. With stunning mountain views, abundant wildflowers, and wildlife, it is an amateur photographer’s dream.

4. Pike’s Street Market, Seattle, WA: A fixture of Seattle, the current site for the Market was founded in the 1907. I love to visit the market, not only to buy fresh produce, but to people watch. I decided to use the Market as the location for Ivy’s restaurant in What’s Wrong with Mr. Perfect? because of its full sensory explosion of sight, sound, and smell.

5. Lake Crescent, WA: My sister lives in Forks, so I go around the lake when I visit her. Lake Crescent has the bluest water that is especially dazzling in the sunshine. Located on scenic Highway 101, it is hard to keep your eyes on the road when faced with such stunning beauty.

6. Wild Horses Monument, Columbia River Gorge, WA: When most people think of the Pacific Northwest, they think lush mountains and deep lakes, but there is another side of Washington that is just as stunning. Located on the top of a steep hill overlooking the mighty Columbia is the Wild Horses Monument. I know it’s steep, because my niece made me climb to the very top to observe the sculptures up close and personal. They are life-sized welded steel plate statues made by Spokane artist David Govedare for the State's Centennial Celebration.

7. 50,000 Silver Dollars, Haugan, Mt: Located just over the Idaho border in Montana, the 50,000 Silver Dollars is an iconic tourist stop. Embedded in the long, wooden bar are over –you guessed it—50,000 silver dollars, some dating back to the 1800’s. The reason it made my list, is every time I travel to Montana, whomever I’m with always wants to stop there. Both kids, and adults, all seem to enjoy the novelty gifts displayed in abundance.

8. Grand Coulee Dam, Grand Coulee, WA: A monumental project that sparked controversy in the 1920’s, the dam is an impressive site. The visitor center offers free movies that tell about the dam, as well as interactive models showing how it works. You can’t go to the dam without seeing the “dam” show. A laser light extravaganza set against the backdrop of the dam itself, it tells the story of how the dam was built and what power it provides to the region. All this is free, so it makes for a great family vacation. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy the show.

9. Soap Lake, Soap Lake, WA: On your way back from the Grand Coulee Dam is Soap Lake. The black silt is said to have healing powers. My grandmother, who had rheumatoid arthritis, swore by it, and often brought us with her to cover our bodies in the inky mud. Soap Lake is one of only 11 meromictic lakes in the United States.

10. Columbia River Gorge, Vantage, WA: The Columbia River crossing at Vantage rivals the Grand Canyon in its spender. The actual Gorge stretches eighty miles, the landscape ranging from lush forests to the dry grasslands of eastern Washington. With high, jutting cliffs, the Gorge is a sight you have to see.

Kristine Cayne’s Top Ten Favorite Northwest Spots:

Thank you for having the Rainy Day Writers on your blog today! We’re so excited to have the Romance in the Rain available for readers. And this is a great chance for readers to get to know us a little better. Let me start by saying that although I’ve lived in the Seattle area quite a few years, I’m not from here. I don’t get out a lot and as a result, my list is quite different from Charlotte’s and Sherri’s.

1. Pike Place Market – the quintessential NW spot. It’s also the location of the Ivy’s restaurant in What’s Wrong With Mr. Perfect? By Sherri Shaw. It’s a great little market on a hill just above the Puget Sound. The view and the atmosphere are spectacular.

2. Space Needle – another quintessential NW spot. There is a restaurant at the top of the Space Needle. It’s expensive, but well worth the experience if you can afford it. I took my husband and father there for Father’s Day several years ago. It was a perfect clear day, and we could see all the way to Vancouver Canada! If you’re not into eating in a revolving restaurant, you can go to the rooftop lookout. It’s really windy, but free.

3. Seattle Center – this is the area surrounding the Space Needle. It contains the Children’s Museum, an amusement park and this great musical water fountain (the International Fountain). We spent many days their when my children were younger letting them brave the mighty waters.

4. Greenlake – this is a beautiful park and lake in Seattle itself. You can walk all the way around it, bike or rollerblade. Yes. I did that. But I won’t be sharing any photos. Helmet hair. *shudders*

5. CenturyLink stadium – this is the new stadium that was built to house the Seattle Sounders. It’s right downtown, and actually about a mile from where Jamie in Aftershocks works. I had the pleasure of attending a Sounders game there a few weeks ago, and watched the sunset over the Puget Sound from my (very elevated) seat.

6. Kirkland waterfront – another favorite spot to go with the kids. It’s a small park amid Kirkland’s little downtown area with quaint restaurants and shops. Oh and ice cream stores too. You know, for those blistering hot Seattle days… O..o

7. Snohomish – antique store district – I discovered this little gem of a place when I had to take my son there for a soccer game. With over 100 antique stores in a 1-2 block radius, it’s not hard to find that special treasure you always wanted. We also discovered a great Italian restaurant and a pie store. Mmmm... maybe I need to go for another visit.

8. Leavenworth – always wanted to see a German village set in the Alps? Look no further. Okay, it’s the Cascade mountains not the Alps, but the rest is pretty spot on. This is a great place to visit, especially in the fall or at Christmas time.

9. Snoqualmie Falls – while not as majestic as Niagra Falls or the falls at Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre (in Quebec), the Snoqualmie Falls are nevertheless very impressive. By taking a short path through the woods, you can walk right up to the river, and seeing all of this roaring water in a mountain setting is very special.

10. Victoria, BC – what can I say about this great town? It’s a little piece of England in the most western part of Canada. With lots of shops, restaurants, and street entertainers, it’s fun for the whole family. The Butchart Gardens and the vast Pacific Ocean are a sight to behold.

Thank you, Charlotte, Sherri, and Kristine! Normally, a blog post will make me add more books to my wishlist or TBR pile. This one makes me want to add travel destinations to visit when I have the time to travel.

From the pioneer days of Seattle through the smoke-filled clouds of WWII and into the present, Romance in The Rain takes readers on a journey with four generations of the strong-willed and passionate Caldwell family. The anthology of six novellas is a collaboration of the Seattle-based Rainy Day Writers group.

Splendor in the Moss by Charlotte Russell-By the spring of 1853 Englishman James Caldwell has traveled thousands of miles in a quest to find a place to call home. Newly settled Seattle isn’t that place and he’s ready to move on again when widowed Mattie Jensen marches into his life as somber as a cloudy day. But James can see through the solemn haze to Mattie’s strength and passion. Now he has a reason to stay, if he can just convince Mattie to take a second chance on love—and him.

Final Approach by Marianne Stillings—With the world at war, Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Service pilot Lt. Charlene (Charlie) Thompson faces personal battles as well. Pearl Harbor left her a widowed bride, certain love would never come again – but battle-scarred Capt. Joe Caldwell has other ideas for the beautiful lady flyer, if he can just keep her safe from the secret saboteur who’s already taken the life of Charlie’s best friend.

Love Phantom by Dawn Kravagna—University of Washington, 1983: A great place to get an education and meet single men. Drama major Kara Caldwell prefers to hide behind the characters in her plays, yet feels pressure to live up to the example set by her brave and witty grandmother, a veteran of WWII. Can she learn to overcome her reticence and prejudices to discover which guy truly cares for her—and who is just putting on an act? (17,000 words)

What’s Wrong with Mr. Perfect? by Sherri Shaw—No sooner did Chef Ivy Turin wish to meet the perfect man than Sam Rockney walked into her restaurant. But is the sexy Seattle quarterback for real or is there something wrong with Mr. Perfect?

Shelter from the Storm by Clare Tisdale—Seven years and one broken heart later, JD Caldwell returns to Seattle to pick up the pieces of his old life, never imagining he will fall for Maya—the mysterious woman who lets him into her house and bed but keeps the door to her heart tightly closed. When their summer fling takes an unexpectedly serious turn and Maya gives him his walking papers, JD has to decide whether their love—and his legacy—is worth fighting for.

Aftershocks by Kristine Cayne—When Seattle is struck by a devastating earthquake, technical rescue firefighter Jamie Caldwell must save his estranged wife and daughter from the wreckage of a collapsed building. He’s defied the odds hundreds of times, but will his luck finally run out for good?
