Book Tour Review: Impossible by Komal Lewis

Blurb:
Ashton Summers is on her way to becoming the most popular girl in school and nothing—or no one—is going to stand in her way. Especially not Luca Byron, her freak neighbor, with his tattoos, loud music, and distracting green eyes.

Luca Byron has three goals in life: get through high school with a low profile, make sure his garage band becomes something more than a hobby, and try to forget about his insufferable ex-best friend, Ashton, who he can’t get out of his mind.

The last thing Ashton and Luca want to do is rekindle their friendship, but when Ashton takes a tumble down the social ladder, Luca—with his new makeover—is the only one who can help her rise up again by pretending to be her boyfriend. At first, being together is unbearable and annoying, but things start to change as Ashton and Luca discover the real reasons they drifted apart seven years ago.

Now, keeping their hands off each other seems impossible.

IMPOSSIBLE seems to blend in several different YA tropes that have worked well in the movies. There's a Grease-esque set-up between Luca and Ashton's different cliques before Ashton's fall from grace. There's a Drive Me Crazy-esque unlikely match up to seemingly benefit outward appearences in high school vibe with Luca and Ashton's "we're dating" scheme. And there's even a Clueless-esque "the more we spend time together, the more we think we hate each other, while we're really falling in love" theme. Put together, it could sound overwhelming, but it wasn't. IMPOSSIBLE was actually a fairly easy read. With the alternating viewpoints per chapter, and the shorter chapters, Komal Lewis keeps the pace from being slow and I read through the book without much difficulty.

The language of IMPOSSIBLE is simple. Lewis doesn't try to over inflate her characters thoughts and dialog, or add any unusual slang. However, there is some questionable content (not anything I wasn't reading as a 13 year-old, but in today's world...) that makes this book a better read for a mature YA reader, in age and reading level. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to connect with the book, because I definitely didn't connect with Ashton, but there is something to be said for the themes that Lewis presents here.

Though Ashton is a royal bitch through most of the book, her underlying attitude does undergo a change. In the beginning, she just seems like a typical self-serving, selfish, pretty Mean Girl. Being able to read from her point-of-view while she had this attutude almost served to alienate me as a reader, but in the end, more of her attitude was caused by confusion, and having mixed-up emotions than pure selfishness. Luca, Ashton's counterpart was a much better character to connect with from beginning to end, but the overall journey that the two experience together was enjoyable.
