Excerpt from Cash Remington and the Rum Run:

I wake when the air in the room shifts. I crack my eyes open. Nere kneels beside the bed and slowly lifts the mattress. She’s after the stone.

Little minx. The sun shines in her hair, the light strands almost silver.

I add in a snore so she’ll think I’m still out. A secret smile plays across her pink lips, and she reaches farther underneath me.

In one swift movement, I yank her up and toss her onto the bed next to me. She readies to scream, so I slap a hand over her mouth. I climb on top of her nude body and pin her wrists over her head with one hand. I push one knee between hers, though she tries to clamp her legs together.

No chance. I’m far too strong to be denied.

I settle between her legs, and I hiss when my cock rests against her hot pussy, only the fabric of my pants separating me from her.

“A thief?” I glare into her light eyes.

She doesn’t flinch.

“Keep it quiet or I’ll smack you.” I peel my hand from her lips and run it down her side. Her skin is like silk, smooth and warm.

“Get off me.” Her eyes narrow.

“No.” I tighten my grip on her wrists and run my hand beneath her, getting a palm-full of her ass.

“All I want is my stone. Then I’ll go, and you’ll never see me again.”

I knead her flesh, my fingers creeping close to her pussy. “It’s my stone.”

“You stole it!”

I lean down and graze my lips across hers. “I’m a pirate.”

“It’s mine. I’ll get it one way or another.” She glares up at me in challenge, and now I know I have to fuck her. The spirited ones always get to me.

“It seems we’re in a situation. One where I want something, and you want something.” I smirk at her, and her eyes flicker to my lips.

“What do you want?”

I thrust my hips against her. “As if you need to ask.”

She presses her lips into a thin line and glowers at me. “No.”

“Then I guess I’ll take the gem and go. And then you’ll never see me again.” I release her hands and lean away from her. My heart pounds, adrenaline coursing through my veins. I’m toying with her. She’s going to take every inch of me before we leave this room.

“Wait.” She places one of her small hands on my thigh. “If I let you have what you want…” She glances away. “Then you’ll give me the stone?”

No. “Yes.”

“I have your word?” Her eyes sparkle in the noonday sun pouring through the glassless window.

“Of course.” As if the word of a pirate is worth anything

Content Warning: This swashbuckling standalone tale stars an alpha male who takes what he wants. It's full of sex and violence. It's an erotic adventure, not a romance, and is not "safe." If you're cool with these caveats, enjoy!

Blog Tour - Author Guest Post: Bad To The Bone by Wendy Byrne

About the Author:

Wendy lives in the Chicago area. She has a Masters in Social Work and worked in the child welfare field for twelve years before she decided to pursue her dream of writing.

Between teaching college classes, trying to get her morbidly obese cat to slim down and tempering the will of her five-year-old granddaughter, who's determined to become a witch when she turns six so she can fly on her broom to see the Eiffel Tower and put hexes on people--not necessarily in that order--somehow Wendy still manages to fit in writing. She spends the remainder of her days inflicting mayhem on her hero and heroine until they beg for mercy.

My book, Bad to the Bone, is set in Key West. My heroine hates being there, not only because of the circumstances of her uncle’s arrest, but because she hates the heat and humidity. It got me thinking about settings for books and how sometimes they are an integral part of the story—like The Hunger Games or Divergent—where world building is involved. In those two titles there are places and situations the author has to describe in detail because they are foreign to us. We don’t have a frame of reference.

Often times the setting is secondary to the story and the main focus is on the characters. And sometimes there’s a combination of the two. When a story takes place in a small town the people are an important part of the setting. They bring color to the story. So even while they aren’t the sole focus, their interaction with the hero and heroine are typically an integral part of the story. Who’s the town busybody? Who’s the person in town who isn’t afraid to voice their opinion? Who’s the one who antagonizes the situation?

The setting in my story isn’t an integral piece, only an annoyance to Sammie. She hates the weather in Florida, but more than likely her dislike has more to do with the predicament her uncle is in and her frustration in her inability to solve it for him. Below is Sammie’s first meet with Enrique combined with the heat and humidity of Key West.

Sweat trickled down her back as the sun filtered through the windows. Wiping her brow, Sammie drew down a tap, filling another round for the men at the bar. Three ceiling fans, and the air-conditioning could not compete with the heat of the Florida sun and rocketing hormones raging inside her.

The gods of serendipity were knocking at her door, trying to tempt her. The devil on her shoulder tried to convince her how wonderful a walk on the wild side would be for her well-being—relieve stress, put a zing in her step, make her forget about her troubles. But the angel wagged her finger, then stomped her foot to ensure Sammie paid attention.

Now Sammie’s stuck in a situation that has little to do with Florida and more about her propensity for attracting men who are bad for her. Her last boyfriend ended up getting arresting for selling drugs and she didn’t wise up until the police came knocking on her door to see if she was involved as well. That’s been the story of her life. When she meets Enrique, she immediately jumps to the conclusion he’s just like all the rest.

Book Review: The Chosen by Theresa Meyers

Blurb:
Attorney by day, demon-hunter by night, Remington Jackson is used to being on the sunny side of the law, even in the Wild West. But it’s showdown time, and Remy and his brothers are getting desperate. They don’t have the relic they need to slam the door shut on evil—so Remy is going to have to find and steal part of it.

Enter China McGee, shapeshifter, thief, beauty, and current prisoner. When Remy offers her freedom in exchange for a little light-fingered help, she’s pretty sure she’s going to end the association with a good old-fashioned seductive double cross. But there’s something about fighting through a jungle full of Mayan ruins that makes you want to settle down together. China could change. Remy might be special. But none of that matters if the devil takes them all...

THE CHOSEN is the third book in THE LEGEND CHRONICLES about three brothers, Colt, Winchester, and Remington, hunters who live in a world full of Darkin (demons, vampires, shapeshifters) and have embarked on a journey to fulfill a prophesy none of them are quite sure they believe. Colt and Winchester have had their adventures and found their match in two strong women. Now it is Remington's turn. This series is full of action, romance, danger and some elements (like steampunk and a western-like setting) that can draw all sorts of readers.

I MUST start with the characters. Remington and China McGee team up to try to find a portion of an important relic. Because the three novels in the series happen simultaneously, and even share several scenes, the reader has a special treat in getting to see the dynamics of the brothers and the women who are accompanying them on their quests as a group as well as coupled up. Though I thought that Colt was going to firmly stay my favorite of the Jackson brothers, I was also really intrigued by China McGee. Meyers has the ability to flesh out both hero and heroine throughout the story. Neither character is completely dependent on the other; they truly work together, and even if it is begrudgingly, it is clear that each one plays to their own strengths.

Meyers has also built a cool world where many different creatures exist. Blending action, adventure, romance, danger, secrets and betrayal in a steampunky-fied old west world, there is something for everyone who enjoys speculative fiction and/or romance. Start the series with the first book, THE HUNTER, and you won't want to stop until the last page of THE CHOSEN!

About The Author:
The progeny of a slightly mad (NASA) scientist and a tea-drinking bibliophile who turned the family dining room into a library, Theresa Meyers learned early the value of a questioning mind, books and a good china teapot.

A former journalist and public relations officer, she found far more enjoyment using her writing skills to pen paranormal novels in the turret office of her Victorian home.

She’s spent nearly a quarter of a century with the boy who took her to the Prom, drinks tea with milk and sugar, is an adamant fan of the television show Supernatural, and has an indecent love of hats.

Book Review: The Emperor's Edge by Lindsay Buroker

Book: THE EMPEROR'S EDGE
Author: LINDSAY BUROKER
Genre: FANTASY
Published: December 2010

Series: Planned series
Source: Author via Book Lovin' Bitches E-Book Tours, no other compensation given for honest review

From Good Reads:
Imperial law enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon is good at her job: she can deter thieves and pacify thugs, if not with a blade, then by toppling an eight-foot pile of coffee canisters onto their heads. But when ravaged bodies show up on the waterfront, an arson covers up human sacrifices, and a powerful business coalition plots to kill the emperor, she feels a tad overwhelmed.

Worse, Sicarius, the empire's most notorious assassin is in town. He's tied in with the chaos somehow, but Amaranthe would be a fool to cross his path. Unfortunately, her superiors order her to hunt him down. Either they have an unprecedented belief in her skills... or someone wants her dead.

My Review:
This is the second book that I have read by Lindsay Buroker in a very short time, and it certainly won't be the last. From previous experience, I knew to expect adventure, a little danger, great characters, and a multi-faceted story line to go along with Buroker's engrossing writing. I wasn't let down. In fact, I think I liked THE EMPEROR'S EDGE just a little bit more than I did the first book, ENCRYPTED.

While this book takes place in roughly the same world as ENCRYPTED, the timeline is years later, and the planet is a different one in the overall empire. The assassin, Sicarius, who had a supporting role previously, now gets his own book. Here, he teams up with Enforcer Amaranthe Lokdon. The Emperor's life is in danger, and some of his most trusted associates have betrayed him. Working behind the scenes, and largely unknown to the Emperor, Lokdon and her "team" must find a way to thwart a possible coup, while learning to trust each other.

Buroker has a really attractive writing style to me. Though, the female heroine gets to show everything from her point of view, Buroker makes excellent use of dialog to further the plot, as well as create relationships between the characters. I also like how she makes her heroines attractive to smart readers. There's no dumbing down at all. In her first book, the heroine was a cryptographer, and in this book, she is a law enforcement officer. There are times when Lokdon is quite vulnerable and unsure; unsure of herself, how well her plan will work, and whether she can get her team to work cohesively. However, she always comes off as resourceful, and even stands up to Sicarius, a notorious assassin.

I would definitely recommend THE EMPEROR'S EDGE to any reader that likes fantasy and adventure. Though the romance angle isn't played up too much, I think that anyone who has a romantic heart would enjoy the journey that Lokdon, Sicarius, and the rest of the characters take in this book. And, I'm happy to know that Buroker has more books planned for the future.

4.5/5 for plot
4.5/5 for characters
4/5 for language

My Rating: 13/15 (4 stars)
