What five words would you use to describe Come What May?
Hopeful, sexy, heartfelt, family, trust.


Was there a character in Come What May that was harder for you to write than the others? Why?
Jonas was a bit of a tricky character to write, because he can so easily come across as an ass (and my editor called me on this, too). He’s prickly at first, because he hates his current circumstances and is helpless to change them, but he also needed to be sympathetic. I had to find a balance between his sniping and his sensitive side, and he didn’t make it easy.


If you were creating a soundtrack for Come What May, what 2-5 songs would you want to include on it?

Why romance? What drew you to writing in this genre?
Hope. I love knowing that, no matter what circumstances the main couple is faced with, at the end of the day they will have their happy ending. Real life is so complicated, and we all don’t always find that one person who will love us, flaws and all, so the romance genre is a comfortable place to be when the waters of life get too freaking choppy.


How do you schedule writing time? Do you do a little every day, or have specific days each week that you write?
This past January, I was lucky enough to be able to cut back at my retail job and write full-time. It gives me a lot more freedom in how I structure my days/weeks now, and I still don’t have it down pat. But I do try to be in my home office and at my desk between 9-9:30 in the morning, break for lunch, and then work until around 4 or 5 pm. Since I still work 1 day a week at my retail job, I try to work at least 4 days in my home office, either writing or doing promotional stuff. That gives me two days off each week to spend as I like. It doesn’t always work out perfectly but I’m trying. It’s a work in progress.

He’s a decorated war hero and former SEAL.
She’s trapped in a dangerous situation.
And he’s made her an offer she can’t refuse.


What was the hardest scene for you to write in At the Brink? Why?
Three scenes come to mind, not because they were hard to write, but rather because I had a lot riding on them when I wrote them. I think I’ve told the story elsewhere. When I was “auditioning” for Carina Press, I got a request from the editors considering my At the Brink submission. Requests like these are not unusual at Carina, as they’ve built their reputation by carefully selecting their authors. The editors wanted to see three new scenes added to the original manuscript. I guess in the end they must have liked them, because here we are. ☺ Curious about those scenes? Three hints: One scene involves a custom “active sex” piece of furniture. Another scene has to do with bunk beds. Lots of bunk beds. The third scene is very artistic. It involves paint. Body paint.

Are you working on a writing project now? If so, can you share some details?
Sure! I’m currently working on two new novels and editing several of my upcoming titles. At the Brink marks my second release this year, coming on the heels of The Asset, book one of my Wounded Warrior series, a collection of romantic suspense novels about strong heroines struggling to find their place in the world and the brave, sexy, kickass, military heroes who challenge their limits to protect the women they love.

Right now, I’m putting the last touches on The Stranger, book two of the Wounded Warrior series, coming out in August. The Stranger is about Summer Silva, a warmth loving Miami architect who comes to Alaska chasing after her missing sister only to find herself stranded in the Alaskan wilderness and in danger from more than the elements. Only a mysterious, sexy stranger, an Alaskan scion and an ex-military pilot fighting his own demons who has no time for a lady in distress—let alone one who gets into trouble when she sleepwalks—can protect Summer from murder, treason and Alaska’s ruthless winter.

All-time favorite sports movies and/or books
Oh! There are so many good sports movies and books. I’m not sure anything will ever dethrone Field of Dreams as my all-time favorite sports movie. I cry from beginning to end. Something about the movie grabs me by the heart and doesn’t let me go. I also enjoy A League of Their Own, Draft Day, and Moneyball. As for books, Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Chicago Stars (football) series is my all-time favorite with Rachel Gibson’s Chinooks (hockey) series a close runner up.

Of all your published works, what's been your most difficult (or time consuming) book to write and why?
I’ve had a few tough ones, mostly because of self-doubt. The last two books in my Cleveland Clash women’s football series were particularly difficult because I was struggling with some health issues (psoriatic arthritis, hypothyroidism, and severe anemia). It was a very harsh reminder that I’m only human and can only do so much. Fortunately, my editor, Tara, and my publisher, Crimson Romance, were incredibly understanding and accommodating.

What's your writing schedule? Do you fit in writing time every day or schedule specific days for writing?
I write full time, so my writing schedule is a lot like a normal work schedule. Once the house is empty, I get to work. Of course, I get distracted way too easily by things like laundry, and phone calls, and lunch dates, but flexibility is the beauty of this job. I also try very hard not to write in the evening or on weekends, so I can spend that time with my family and friends.

She thought about that for a minute, thought about him, standing there, looking at her like she was the only woman in the world, and the heat was undeniable. The attraction unmistakable. Sam Sutter was a mouth-wateringly beautiful man. Five years younger and without a discernible life plan, but damn it, libidos didn’t care about those things. And honestly, the only thing holding her back from taking out all her recent frustrations on his blessed body right now was the fact his crew was just outside the leftfield wall.

To neutralize the lust bubbling in her veins, she asked, “Do you miss baseball?”

He looked broadsided by the random question and didn’t rush to answer.

“I know that came out of left field …” she grinned at her cleverness, “but I’ve been wondering about it ever since the festival. When my dad was asking you about baseball, you looked very uncomfortable.”

His gaze shifted away from her and anchored onto something in the grandstand, but then he shrugged like she hadn’t hit a nerve. “I was uncomfortable because I was worried about your father. I wasn’t sure what was going on. That’s all.” But his jaw pulsed, and she knew better.

“Sam …” She stepped closer, narrowing the space between them. “I saw that same look a minute ago when I asked you to help me out with the coaching prospects. You miss baseball. It’s okay to admit it. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t be human. God, you played every year of your life until you were how old? Just because you were ready to hang it up professionally doesn’t mean you don’t miss the game personally.” He looked at her then with a hurt in his eyes that seemed to be saying maybe he wasn’t as ready to hang it up as he pretended to be.

“I miss some things more than others,” he said. “There’s a rush you get from playing the game.” Silence stretched out between them as the warm wind wrapped them in the sun-dried fragrances of spring. All the while, his eyes roamed her face until they focused on her lips.

“Fortunately you can get that rush from other things.”

“Like?” she asked, breathlessly, knowing damned well she was encouraging him.

“This,” he whispered before he leaned in and kissed her, a brush of his lips, soft as the breeze that carried the heated scent of his skin to her nose and then to her brain.

S.B. Alexander’s passion for writing began when she read her first Stephen King novel, The Shining. Over the years she kept telling family and friends she was going to write a book. Interview with S.B. Alexander:

How did the Maxwell Series begin?
The series was born out of my love for baseball, family and experiences in my life that have challenged me and shaped me into who I am today.

Q: What will fans of Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream like about Dare to Love?
S.B.: Dare to Love is based on Kelton Maxwell, brother to Kade, Kross and Kody. Out of the four brothers Kelton is quite cocky, brash, infallible and doesn’t think before he acts. He’s funny, sexy and always keeps his family and his values in the forefront. Fans who’ve read the series so far have a love/hate relationship with Kelton, and they’ll love getting in his head and will be surprised at some of the choices he makes.

Q: Dare to Love steps away from the lives of Kade Maxwell and Lacey Robinson, whose dramatic love story dominated the pages of Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream. Was it your intention from the beginning to expand on the stories of other characters in the series?
S.B.: The series is all about family and growing from tragedy. The main characters in the series have all been affected by something heartbreaking. From that, I want to take readers on a journey into each of their lives to show how they change and grow, how they help others and at the same time, how they overcome their issues to set a path in life.

Q: You inserted a piece of your personal life, your experience with PTSD, into Dare to Kiss and Dare to Dream. Did any elements of your life sneak into Dare to Love?
S.B.: The series itself has a lot of elements that I had and didn’t have growing up. And in Dare to Love, I didn’t have a cohesive family unit around me. I didn’t have parents who were open to love, which made it difficult for me to express emotions, and if I did, I always seemed to have gotten hurt by love.

Q: After writing two Young Adult books, what inspired you to write New Adult fiction, and how was writing this genre different?
S.B.: As a writer, when I’m drafting an outline for a story, I don’t think too much about the genre. I let the story unfold. But in both genres the characters are learning life in different states of their pre-teen, teenage or college age years. What I find different in one genre over the other is the character’s decision making. They might’ve learned from an experience in high school, but when faced with that same experience in college how will they react? Will they make the same decision or will they take a different path?

Q: How do you balance your time between working full time and writing on the side?
S.B.: I set a weekly goal for writing, and in between all the daily stuff I have going on, I write. I usually accomplish the goal I set, and if I don’t I make up for it somehow in the following week.

Q: What’s next for you?
S.B.: I still have planned three more books in the Maxwell Series, and the next one will be based on Kross Maxwell, the next triplet. However, I have a new series I’m outlining that will be based on a family that is not as cohesive as the Maxwell family. This new series will be a little darker and will have elements of mystery, romance and suspense. On top of that, I’m working on my fourth book in my vampire series.

Who is your favorite author and why?
Tough question. I have lots of favorite authors that I fangirl over. I love Mia Sheridan’s writing with all my heart. Her stories are so real, so moving that I just can’t help but get lost in them. And I love the fact that they’re real people going through real struggles as they make their way through life. I could pick any of her books from my shelf, and yes I have them all signed, and just get lost in their world for a while.

Another author I love is Amy Bartol. She is an amazing writer. The way she creates her stories have me begging to be included in them. Both her Premonition series and Kricket series are some of my favorites. And I tell her that often!

Heather Lyons is another one of my favorites. The Collector’s Society series is fantastic. I love how she creates these pictures in my head as I read, making me see everything as if it’s a movie playing out in my thoughts. And her attention to detail and creating these characters that come to life amaze me. I recommend her books all the time simply because they’re some of the best out there.

And I’m sure this is only supposed to be one author but I can’t go without saying how much I love LB Simmons!! She is such an amazing writer and friend that I need to mention her. She has a gift with her words and pulls at your heart strings with so much ease that you can’t help but fall in love with her work. Plus she is one of the sweetest people I have ever met and I’m lucky enough to call her my friend!



Excerpt from Fated To Be Yours:

As I fiddle with the clasp on my bag, I see out of the corner of my eye that someone takes the seat next to me on my left. Not wanting to invade the person’s space, I pull my bag over towards the right to give them more room. But as I look to the side, my eyes are drawn to the nicely tailored pair of gray slacks and designer shoes. I’m not sure how I know the pants are tailored, but I do. There’s just something about the material that says he didn’t buy them from JC Penney. I can’t help but admire his well put together attire and get confused when I feel my breathing start to speed up. My eyes roam over the slacks and the black sweater, causing heat to run through my system while noting that he obviously takes excellent care of himself. He has an athletic build, with his broad shoulders and lean muscular upper body. Even through his sweater I know that there is nothing but well defined sculpted muscles adorning his entire body.

My gaze slows as it passes over his chin, which is sporting some seriously sexy stubble, finally falling onto a pair of bright blue eyes looking intently at me. His face takes my breath away and it feels as if my heart has slowed its tempo. He has piercing blue eyes and dark hair that is styled like he just rolled out of bed. You know, that sexy way guys wear their hair that makes women turn into blabbering idiots. Chiseled cheekbones and a strong jaw complete the package. He screams yummy to my starving body. He appears to be in his late twenties or early thirties if I had to guess. I blink twice and then look back down at my bag, feeling shy and awkward all of a sudden.

“Is this seat taken?” he asks in his deep English-accented voice.

That voice. There is something about his voice that seems familiar to me. I know I’ve never met this man before in my life. I would most definitely remember meeting someone like him. I look up again into his kind eyes and he smiles at me, showing perfect white teeth. Oh my, the earth can swallow me up now.

“Um, no. No one’s sitting there. Well, you are now, I suppose.” Lame. Totally lame. Way to go, Tessa.

He gives a little chuckle, keeping the smile in place on his perfect face. I give him a slight returning smile and can feel my cheeks start to heat up. His eyes dance around my face and I swear I see something flash within them. Something familiar but I can’t quite figure out why.

He looks as if he’s about to say something, but the crackle of the speakers draw our attention to the airline desk attendant as she announces that our flight is ready to board. Kara is still talking on her phone but stands up with me as we make our way to the counter. I’m almost eager to get away from him, yet sad at the same time. The only comfort I can gather is he’s going to be on the same flight as me. The mystery man follows suit and stands a couple of people behind me in line. As we board the plane, Kara ends her call and then turns around to ask me where I am sitting.

“Aren’t we sitting together again?” I ask her.

“No. I wasn’t able to get us a seat next to each other. I’m in row three, how about you?”

“Six.”

“Oh well. Maybe you’ll get lucky and the person you’re sitting with is a mute. Or maybe they’ll just be some hot eye candy that you can talk to and start an illicit affair with,” Kara says, as she shrugs her shoulders.

“You’re so funny. You know I’ll have my nose stuck in my Kindle or I’ll be sleeping.” I laugh as I smirk at her. She gives me a grin back.

I make my way through the aisle and find my seat. Row six, seat A. No problem. I sit down and pull out my Kindle, getting it ready for the long flight across the Atlantic. I’m juggling the device in my lap as I bend down to stow my laptop bag when I notice that someone is occupying the seat next to me. I inwardly sigh. Of course, I’m not lucky enough to sit by myself. I glance over to my right and see a newly familiar pair of shoes. I slowly straighten my body back into an upright position. With a small lump forming in my throat, I turn my head and there he is, my mystery man, sitting next to me and flashing me a smile that causes my heart to stop yet again.

I Am Not Gabriella

One thing that has surprised me about being published is that people seem to have a hard time separating me from my main character.

Gabriella Giovanni is an Italian-American crime reporter living in San Francisco.

There are a few similarities:

I mean, yeah sure I'm Italian-American, brunette, and a former crime reporter, but really that's about it. But unlike my character, I’ve been with my husband for 24 years, life in Minneapolis, and have two kids. And that is just the tip of the iceberg for differences.

I write in first person present tense and I think this contributes to it.

But when people read my books and are completely immersed in Gabriella Giovanni's world - and frankly, in her head - they sometimes come away feeling like they know me intimately.

Well this is hard to swallow on many counts. I'm not my character. Thank goodness! My mom reads my books. My dad reads my books. I have violence. And sex scenes! If I were writing about myself, I'd die of embarrassment and never be able to write another word.

Gabriella Giovanni is a fictional character. Sure, she has some of me in her. But so does the serial killer and the cop and the little kid and the gangbanger on the corner. Every character has a tiny bit of me in him or her, after all, they came from my brain.

But I'm not my characters.

However, some people who read my books assume that I'm Gabriella.

In fact, one of my friends who read my book last summer was upset because Gabriella was sleeping around and I've been married 20 years.

"I'm not Gabriella," I told her, even though I really shouldn't have had to say that.

And yet.

It is by far, the most common question I'm asked in an interview: “Are you Gabriella?”

So much so, that I made myself take the Myers-Brigg personality test twice. Once as me and once as Gabriella. It was no surprise to me that we were polar opposites in every way.

I’m not Gabriella, but I sure do like spending time in her world and from what I’ve heard, my readers do, as well!

Read My Mind: The Saint is about Soren and Eleanor meeting for the first time, as well as her introduction into the BDSM culture. What was your introduction like?

Tiffany Reisz: I was sixteen when I first read THE SLEEPING BEAUTY CHRONICLES by Anne Rice. Those books changed the way I thought about sex and pain and life. I knew after that I had this other side of me that wasn’t going to be content with a normal vanilla relationship. In my twenties I started exploring the BDSM scene. I met some kinksters, played with dominants and sadists, and had a grand ole time. Whenever I’m in NYC I always see a Domiantrix or play with one of my Manhattan kinkster friends.



RMM: The White Years is the second novel-length series involving characters from the Original Sinners. When you first started writing, did you always plan to delve into Nora's past this way?

TR: After I was finished writing THE SIREN I knew I had so many more stories to tell about these characters. I wanted to show what happened to Michael after he lost his virginity to Nora. I wanted to show Griffin finding true love. I wanted to figure out who this Kingsley Edge person was. And more than anything else, I wanted to show why Nora going back to Søren was not only inevitable, but the right thing for her to do. So yes, I always wanted to go back into her past. It’s weird and kinky there.



RMM: Besides the Original Sinners full length novels, you've also written many short stories involving the OS characters. Do you plan to keep doing that? Any future plans to publish another anthology with Megan Hart?

TR: I’m writing eight full-length Original Sinners novels. Maybe a couple more novellas. After that I’ll write an entirely new series in an entirely different genre. The book with Megan Hart isn’t really an anthology. We both wrote Cosmo Red Hot Reads and Cosmo wanted to put them into print. They’re not quite long enough on their own for print but if you put two into one book, voila! Since Megan and I both write on the spicier side, they thought we’d be a good fit together. So no, no plans for more of those. That was just a happy accident.



RMM: Moving away from your books, you're very active on social media, especially Twitter. Have you ever been asked a question you didn't want to answer?

TR: Oh yes, all the time. Some people (and it’s a very small number) have boundary issues. I really dislike it when people ask for things like free stories or free copies of my books. I have bills to pay, cats to feed. I can’t give away things constantly. I can’t work for free. But again, that’s a very small number of people. Overall my interactions with fans are 99.9% positive and .1% “are you kidding me?”



RMM: And finally, just because, can you anagram the names Nora, Kingsley, Soren, Michael, and Griffin into a interesting phrase?

TR: Nope. But an internet anagram generator came up with “A Offence Mingling Kink Sir Sorry.”

Welcome Theresa! I had some burning questions I wanted to ask the author about her THE LEGEND CHRONICLES series, and all of you readers get to see what she replied.


Please tell my readers a little more about the The Legend Chronicles and the brothers Jackson.

The Legend Chronicles was originally envisioned as a series of steampunk stories all set in the wild weird west. Three brothers, all named after their father's favorite guns, Winchester, Remington and Colt, have been raised in this kind of secret society known as the Legion of Hunters. These Hunters are responsible for protecting humanity against the paranormal creatures in our world collectively known as Darkin (things like demons, vampires, ghosts, shape-shifters, werewolves, etc.) There's a prophecy that three brothers will unite something called the Book of Legend (a kind of compendium of all Hunter knowledge on how to kill different Darkin) which when bound together will help seal the Gates of Nyx to permanently shut out the dark forces from our world (please note that I came up with that whole thing two seasons before it showed up on Supernatural and that the idea for my heroes was spawned in the mid 90s and sat on my hard drive of my computer for years waiting until paranormals were selling again - so while this series seems like Supernatural crossed with Wild Wild West, I had the stories in my head and down in my computer before the series was a glimmer in the producer's eye).
Winchester is the eldest brother and is a law man, trying to get away from the Hunter life and be normal. Colt is the baby of the family and is out to prove he's just as big and bad a Hunter as his outlaw father was. And Remington, well, Remy is a bit of a contradiction. First off he's an attorney who's also a Hunter. He likes to be seen as respectable and he's well-educated, but he's not above twisting the rules to suit him if the need arises. All together each of these brothers must search for a missing section of the Book of Legend using a Darkin to assist them--and of course, it was only fair I make each Darkin as attractive an irresistible as possible to keep things distracting and interesting for my Jackson brothers! So there you have it. The series is a blend of steampunk, action-adventure and paranormal romance.


Which book (or brother) was the most challenging to write? Most enjoyable?

Ah, that's two different questions! This current book, The Chosen, was certainly the most difficult to write, not just because I had to write it back-to-back with three other deadlines for different publishers, but because the series was designed to have a continuing timeline. All the books are happening at once, which means in the third book I had to know EVERYTHING that was happening in the previous two books and all the secondary characters' movements off-stage and keep it all in my head while I was writing. I also had to write a scene or two for the THIRD time from a different point of view. As any writer can tell you, it's hard enough finding the right point of view for a scene, knowing which character has the most at stake. But to take that same scene, rip it apart, and re-stitch it together while being unable to modify any of the dialog or the physical movements or expressions of the characters, is really tough! It requires you to get into the head of the other brothers in the scene and really know them well enough to know what that smirk or raising of the eyebrows meant.
Now to answer your second question, the most enjoyable book to write was The Hunter because it was the first, naturally, so there were no world constraints. I could create anything! In addition it was fun because I really like Colt's mechanical horse Tempus and the idea of having a succubus for a heroine and a womanizer for a hero who have to resist one another was a lot of fun to write.


What was your first encounter with steampunk, and what hooked you on the sub-culture?

I've always been a lover of Victoriana, even as a child. When other kids asked for calendars of puppies or kittens, I asked for one of Victorian house plans (which I still have! *blush*). I was just fascinated by the era and most of the formals I sewed for dances in high school had Victorian styling to them with bustles or big mutton-chop styled sleeves (a la Gibson girl). And when I started writing fiction, I was writing historical romances set in the Victorian era. So when I went to my first "steampunk" event at Steampunk University (a weekend event put on in Seattle by the local steampunk group every year) I was stunned to find people who loved all the things I had loved for years! I was rather hooked on the sub-culture before I even knew what it was so the process of discovering it was kind of like coming home.


The Legend Chronicles is mostly adventure and romance with some steampunk elements. How easy or hard was it to combine these?

Actually it was easier than you'd think, at least for me, because I started out writing historical romances. Since steampunk is essentially a historical romance but with some reimagining of the era using fantastical inventions and science, it wasn't that hard. As for the adventure? That's always something I try to weave into my stories. It makes them more entertaining and fast-paced to read and to write!


What conventions or book events can a fangirl (or boy) find Theresa Meyers attending in 2013?

I'll be attending the RT Booklover's Convention in Kansas City, May 1-5 as well as the Authors After Dark Readers Convention in Savannah, GA August 15-18 as well as the book booksigning event at Emerald City Writers Conference in Seattle, Oct. 18-20. “So how are you planning on getting me out of here? They’ve got a price on my head. And you ain’t a judge and now you’re stuck here in the pokey same as me.”

Remington Jackson’s eyes sparkled with a mix of mischief and determination. “You didn’t think I’d walk in here without an alternative exit plan, did you?” he pulled the right side of his jacket back to reveal not just a holstered revolver and gun belt filled with silvery bullets, but also a couple of glass vials of clear liquid topped with cork stoppers.

China snorted. “It’s gonna take a lot more than that little bit of water if you want to get through those adobe walls.”

He gave her an arch look. “It would, if it were water.” He picked up one vial, and glanced at her. “But considering it’s nitro glycerin, I’m assuming it’ll be much more effective. Toss that mattress up on its side and hunker down behind it for cover.” She didn’t question, just did as he said.

Remington crouched down behind the mattress with her in the corner of the cell, their backs to the bars as he threw the glass vial as hard as he could at the outer adobe wall, then ducked.
The explosion rocked the jail, sending down a shower of dust and chunks of brick. Miss McGee coughed, then frowned. “Blowing up the jail? That’s your solution?”

He shrugged. He really didn’t care what she thought of his methods. “It works.” His life wasn’t a black or white proposition. It was more like a smorgasbord. He took what he needed, when he needed it, to get the job done. Being a Hunter, even part time, meant he didn’t always have the luxury of doing things by the book.

Judging by the narrow-eyed look and pinched mouth on Miss McGee’s pretty face, he’d been right to bring the iron bracelet along as a precaution. Colt said she could change into many things, including a mountain lion, and he had no plans of getting shredded to pieces on the way back to Tombstone. Remington didn’t waste any time. He hustled Miss McGee out of the jail as quickly as possible, helping her cross the rubble, aware that the sheriff and half the town would likely be on their heels at any moment.

They dashed around the outer edge of the jail, and waited for everyone to disappear inside. He grabbed hold of her hand. “Let’s go.”

He rushed to his horse, who was spooked by the explosion, and pulled the reigns from the hitching post.

China’s mouth dropped open. “How are we gonna get out of here quick on that? Don’t you have a mechanical horse like Colt?”

“No. Hate the damn thing. Now are you coming or not?”

China snapped her mouth closed and nodded. Remington mounted in one smooth swift motion, then hauled the Darkin up to sit in front of him. Well, really, given the confines of the saddle she sat more in his lap than in front of him. She was far softer than he’d anticipated. Somehow Miss McGee’s prickly exterior didn’t change how very feminine she felt. “Hold on to the pommel.” She gripped it hard and he grasped the reins in each hand.

“Is this really necessary?” she growled as he kicked the horse into motion.

“Until I have clear access to Diego Mendoza’s information, absolutely.” That was a half truth. He could have just taken whatever she’d gotten from the safety deposit box and left her there, but his gut had told him that wasn’t the safest path. And if there was one thing Remington did, it was always listen to his gut. Besides everything Colt had him meticulously research indicated a Darkin was needed to access the hiding place of the missing pieces of the Book. No, he didn’t intend on letting Miss McGee out of his sights any time soon.

He wheeled the horse around and sped up the hill, making quick tracks out of Bisbee before anyone figured out what had happened and where they’d gone. He didn’t stop or slow until Bisbee was out of sight over the rim of the hills.

“I can just give you the page. That’s all there was. No map. Not a decent one anyway. Just a bunch of squiggly lines. No place names. No directions.” With her right hand she reached beneath the edge of her leather jacket and pulled a folded page of yellowed paper from the breast pocket of her faded pale blue chambray shirt. “Here. Take it. Then you can just drop me off at the next town. Deal?”

Remington smiled. She was just as anxious to get away from him as she was to get back at Colt. He could tell by the nervous way she fidgeted. “No deal. How do I know that paper will lead me anywhere?”

She shrugged, the movement causing her back and the curve of her shoulders to rub up against his chest. Remington grit his teeth. He was a Hunter, not a monk, after all. And despite the taint of being Darkin, she was a beautiful creature.

“You don’t. But I don’t have anything else, so it doesn’t matter.”

“Oh, I think you have a bit more than that. You were working with Colt to help find the lost piece of the Book Diego knew about, weren’t you?”

She heaved a sigh. “I don’t know anything.”

“That’s not what Colt said.”

A fine tremor worked its way through her body. Remington wasn’t sure if it was anger or desire. There was an exceedingly fine dividing line between hate and love and it didn’t take a whole hell of a lot to push some folks from one to the other.

“Colt knows everything I do.”

“Yes, but he’s bent on finding Cadel’s piece of the Book my father hid. That means I’m collecting you so you can help him find the piece Diego is rumored to have uncovered.”

She twisted in his lap. The leather stretched across her finely curved ass was not nearly enough of a barrier between them. Remington grunted. China gazed up at him. “You’re trying to put the Book of Legend back together, aren’t you?”

They started down the rugged hills surrounding Bisbee and Remington weighed the option of telling her the truth vs. telling her only what he wanted her to know. His gut told him to trust her when every bit of Hunter training told him he was a fool to do so.

“Yes.”

Something changed in her eyes. A flash of silver, like lightning streaking across a stormy, cloud-covered sky. It was a breath-taking sight. “I’ll help you on one condition.”

Remington was tempted to tell her she wasn’t exactly in a position to bargain, but his curiosity got the better of him. In the courts sometimes what people told you when trying bargain, revealed far more about their intentions than they realized. “And what’s that?”

“If you do find all the pieces, I want to be there when you put it together.”
Remington frowned. “Why?”

“’Cause if what the Darkin legends say is true, it’s gonna be one hell of a show.”
